WHAT DO YOU REFLECT

Lighthouse

A decision to take the shortcut to my vehicle required that I walk past a line of parked cars. As I did so my attention was drawn to a light that emanated from within one of vehicles. Redirected by the need to investigate why in the middle of the day there was a light shining from this motionless car, I went to get a closer look. I soon realized that the light did not originate from within the vehicle but from an external source. Realizing this I scanned the area in an effort to identify the cause of the reflection. I am not sure what caused me to look up but when I finally did I found the source of the light – a street light that had not been turned off.
A few days later, and again in
the middle of the day, my co-worker called and told me that she noticed that I had left my headlights on. Looking through the window I confirmed that there was in fact a light reflecting from the headlamps of my car. I quickly got my keys and hurried toward the vehicle muttering a frustrated plea to God asking Him not to allow my car battery to die but when I got to the vehicle the headlights were not on. Not seeing the source that caused the reflection in the headlights I turned to walk back to the office; As I did so I looked up and identified the source of the reflection – it was a flood light that had been left on in the vicinity.

Walking back to the office I began to ponder the significance of the reflecting lights that seemingly demanded my attention. I realized that in both instances the vehicles were stationary. Though they were not incapable of motion – their circumstances required them to be stationary for a time. Despite the fact that the vehicles were required to be motionless at that particular time this did not inhibit their ability to reflect light. In fact I believe that my interest in the source off light was only peaked because the vehicles were stationary.

Matthew 5:14-16 tell us that “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

The question is what do you reflect?

I know that there have been times in my own life when the motionlessness of my own circumstances so depressed me that I began reflecting something other than the light of Christ. Instead of being a reflection of the hope, peace, joy, patience and rest that can be found in Christ, my speech, attitude disposition and even my actions became reflectors of my stagnant situation. The reality is reflecting Christ in the midst of sorrow, rejection, pain, hardships, crisis …, is never easy but … it is still a call to a place where we can choose to authentically reflect the light and love of Christ.

So have courage my friend for the place where you now stand is your place of ministry – an opportunity to display the light of Christ for all to see so that they may come to glorify the Father in Heaven.

Father I pray for the one that is reading this today, for the one who is, at this time, called to minister in a stationery place. I pray that we will not succumb to weight of our struggles but instead that you would grant us a grace to endure. I also pray mighty God for the strength of character to reflect the light of your image even in the midst of our deepest sorrow and pain. As we reflect your image in our attitudes and our actions, I pray Lord that the witness of our stance in you, will cause others to seek out the source of our light. It is in Jesus’ name that I do pray AMEN.
