Bebbling: The process of cutting, reshaping a stone to achieve a flat surface.
I first learnt of this term some time ago when I was led to ask a stone cutter what he intended to do with the stones he had masterfully reshaped.
I was led to ask the question because the same stones, which were weeks earlier meticulously selected and skillfully hand crafted, now lay heaped in a pile idle and unused.
It seemed so very strange to me that the stone cutter would have invested so much time and energy on the stones to let them lay unused for so long.
The stone cutter’s response to me was that workmen were still preparing the area where the stones were to be used. He went on to say that as soon as the area had been prepared the stones would be utilized. In other words their time had not yet come.
As I pondered the situation I wondered how these stones would have reacted to what they had been through had they been alive.
Interestingly 1st Peter 2:5 (Living Bible) says that you have become living building-stones for God’s use in building his house. With that said, how have you reacted to your situation?
I know that I have you been confused, angry, and sometimes even bitter about my own process of chiselling and reshaping? I have sometimes surmised that the chiselling process meant that I was unfit for the job at hand and often I have worried about whether or not I would ever again be useful. In bewilderment I have even cried out to God asking him why he has forgotten me for so long.
For the living stone that is now reading this article if these have become your concerns as well then I encourage you today as I was encouraged to take heart, the master builder has carefully selected you, he has hand crafted you and has destined the area of your usefulness to be prepared. In time you will see just how useful you are.
By the way the stones that the stone cutter had reshaped were later that week interlaid one with the other. Each chiselled reshaped flat side interlocking with the next until finally, there now stands erect, a formidable retaining stone wall, capable of withstanding the onslaught of flood waters and providing a safeguard to life and property.
So you see my friend the bebbling that we each must face is not for nought. There is purpose and significance in it. You are being reshaped to interlock with another bebbled living stone. The result will be the erection of walls in the Kingdom of God capable of withstanding the attack of the enemy. Take courage my friend for in due time you will see just how useful you are. You are not forgotten.
